Canterlot was quieter than usual as Princesses Celestia and Luna flew home together. There was obviously a lot on their minds. Even as they greeted the staff and guards on the way to their room, the two alicorn sisters were fixated on the Crystal Empire's newfound freedom from King Sombra.
"Sister?" Luna politely asked.
"Yes, Luna?" Celestia replied.
"How are you so adept at accurately predicting what would happen? How did you know Twilight would have Spike bring the Crystal Heart to its rightful place?" Luna questioned, amazed at Celestia's unseemly correct foresight.
Celestia didn't think much of it. "Oh! That's just... haha... something I learned after ruling Equestria for so long. The longer you observe ponies' lives, and their outcomes, you start to notice many subtle patterns. I knew Twilight would succeed, without actually stealing the spotlight!"
Luna playfully chuckled. "Yes... I suppose, Tia. You always were a genius."
After chatting for a few minutes, Luna and Celestia both decided to cuddle on their pillow-bed, just like when they were fillies.
"Hee hee… We really should do this more often, Woona!~" Celestia giggled.
"Celestia-ha-ha-ha! Stop! I'm so-ho tickli-hi-hish on my belly!!!~" Luna thrashed with laughter, unable to escape her sister's grasp.
A tickle fight soon broke out. It was close, but in the end, Celestia came out on top. As usual. After all, she knew all her sister's sweet spots, while Luna was barely lucky enough to find a weak point on her left side, just under the wing.
Tired, the two regal ponies settled down and snuggled beneath a warm blanket.
Leaning her head on Luna's, Celestia asked, "It's beautiful tonight..."
"Yes. Yes it is..." Luna bashfully agreed.
Celestia smiled kindly. "The reason that it's so pleasant, Luna, is that you're the pony in charge of it. I don't think Equestria's nights, and ponies' dreams, could ever wind up in better hooves. But... the most precious part of every night... is you."
"Tia...
" Luna whispered, wiping a tear from her eye.
Celestia nuzzled heads with Luna as she went on. "If the night ever lost its brightest light, all the rest would just fizzle out... You know how important you are to the daily cycle of the country. And our subjects. ...and me... You DO know that, right? Just never forget; you're irreplaceable. And the best... part... is...?"
"Hmmm? What is it, Sister?" Luna interrupted, noticing how Celestia was suddenly distracted from her sisterly-love speech. She was staring at a desk, the one where Twilight's friendship reports arrived whenever Spike sent one.
"Hm. Excuse me, Luna. I need to see what this is..." Celestia, with great displeasure, got up to investigate the letter that suddenly appeared. It wasn't like Twilight to have one sent this late at night...
"What does it say, Celestia?" Luna asked full of concern.
Celestia didn't reply right away. She glossed over the letter, making several short comments. "Really...?" "Hmmmmm…" "No... That can't be right..." Suddenly, as she finished, her eyes opened wide with surprise. "Oh, dear..." she mumbled in her "serious" tone.
"Tia...?" asked a worried Luna.
Celestia turned to her sister. "Luna... It seems that we have a real lead on how the Koopa Troop got so strong. Twilight says that she and her friends got another letter from one... 'Princess Peach...' ...that warned them about how their enemies are boosting themselves. The letter mentioned... the Nightmare Forces."
Luna looked very startled at the news. "The... The Nightmare Forces?! Oh, my..."
Celestia only nodded in the affirmative. "Well, it seems Twilight asked for an explanation on what they are... Would you like to tell them, or should I?"
"No... It is okay, Sister. I'll... I'll tell them." Luna had to take a deep breath to negate the initial shock. "I shall fly down to Ponyville right away."
"Thank you, Luna. I'll reply to Twilight and tell her to assemble her friends at the Golden Oaks Library. I'm... sorry that this had to come up..."
"No, Sister," Luna insisted. "They deserve to know. They NEED to know."
In seconds, Luna departed from Canterlot and started flying towards Ponyville. As she flew, a distressed look crossed her face. "Who better to explain the threat, than somepony who was once under their power?" she thought...
